The Way of the Warrior
The Eastern Warriors history dates back to the inaugural Super Rules (Masters) football season in 1984 when we joined as Eastern Districts Superrules Football Club. Over 40 years on, the Eastern Warriors brings together men and women from 35 through to their 70s to enjoy football for fun, friendship and fitness.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. Beginners are welcome, our experienced players and coaches can show you the skills you need in a friendly environment, with men and women of any age over 35 welcome.
Generally a minimum of two functioning limbs is all that is required. Those who haven’t run for a while (or ever) will find it hard work at first, but like anything, the more you turn up for training, the easier it will get. We aim to maximise match simulation drills at training to build fitness for games.
Most Masters AFL clubs are stretched for players and the Warriors are no exception, so if you want to play and join training, yes, you will almost certainly get a game. We are always looking for players.
The Eastern Warriors fields four teams in the Vic Metro league – Mens Over 35s, Over 50s and Over 55s, and Womens Non-Contact. The season starts in April and ends in August, with finals played in September (there are no finals in the Over 55s). There are 10 games per season, with women playing Saturdays and men playing Sundays. They are generally two weeks apart.
Masters is very similar to local AFL rules. It is full contact, 18-a-side football with maximum six players on the bench. There are no knees up allowed, which is largely irrelevant since the majority of players have not gotten airborne in at least five years.
You can find the Vic Metro AFL Masters rules here.
You will need your own footy boots, plus black socks and black shorts for home games and white shorts for away games.
The club will provide a playing jumper and will also order your personalised Warriors reversible training top with your preferred nickname.
Training is free, but to play matches you must register and pay the annual club fees of $350 – this is required to be paid prior to the start of each season.
No. It is enshrined in the Laws of the Game that no player can choose his or her nickname. Only other players can assign you a nickname – if you have one assigned to you already by another club or approved entity, it can be transferred across to the Warriors with special permission.
When you pay your registration fees to play, your insurance is covered by the Vic Metro AFL Masters League.
This is not a question we recommend asking around the club as it only applies to 35% of players.
The Eastern Warriors are based at Edinburgh Reserve, Marie Avenue, Springvale in Victoria. We have modern club rooms where we can hold social events as well as a great place to watch footy and enjoy a home game.
What Our Members Say
I love the opportunity I get at the Eastern Warriors to be active and also the friends I’ve made. It’s such a good group of girls from all different areas and we’ve really gelled, they are great friends of mine. Now, getting to be a part of the sport I’ve enjoyed watching is so great.
Cathy (Doc)
Womens Non-Contact Team Member
I’ve enjoyed my first year a lot. The social aspect, the fun, the people and the fitness too all in one has been so good. I’ve learnt how to improve my kicking, my handballing from all the experienced guys here who have been playing so long.
Herry (needs a nickname)
Mens Over 35s Team Member
The thing I love most about the Warriors is everybody is so friendly and non-judgmental, nobody criticises if you shank a kick.
I also love the social aspect, having dinner after training on Wednesday night, the social functions we have, and footy trips – we do a lot of things together outside of football.

2025 Vice-Captain Mens Over 50s
