The game formerly known as Womens Non-Contact is now known as Footy Rush, attracting support and interest from AFL Vic Metro.
Last Sunday, driven by Sue and Flea, the Eastern Warriors hosted an information session, training and practice games for the new format at Edinburgh Reserve.
“AFL VIC have developed AFL Rush in response to the growing number of people adapting AFL 9s to suit their needs,” said Sue. “VIC Metro league are participating in a trial with AFL VIC where our non contact teams will be playing AFL rush. As part of the trial AFL VIC are providing the umpires and equipment to run our non contact competition in 2026 at no cost to the League or clubs.
AFL rush is based on seven a side but is adaptable according to the number of players participating.”
The Footy Rush game largely follows the same format as the current Womens Non-Contact, but there are some new rules being introduced, including no ruck contests – only kickouts from goal to start the game (based on who wins the toss) and after every goal.
A good turnout of women representing various teams turned up on Sunday, and we’re sure the team from AFL Vic Metro got plenty of feedback.
As mentioned previously, there will be four teams joining the Eastern Warriors this season in the Womens 35s Footy Rush division, which is an absolute credit to the persistence of Sue, Flea and all of the Warriors women who have kept this format going and growing, always with a smile and a laugh.
